Greetings, San Antonio riders! We hope you're finding ways to stay cool and beat the South Texas heat so that you can enjoy all of your favorite bicycling activities this summer. It's been too long since we at Bike San Antonio updated you on how we've been engaging with the local bike coalition to advocate for bike lanes and infrastructure in our city. Here's a rundown of what we've been working on:
Putting the Bike Network Plan into action
Our members have been coordinating with their City Council representatives to host bike rides in neighborhoods within their districts to point out streets and corridors that are in need of bike facilities or improvements and make sure the officials know which areas should be prioritized in accordance with the San Antonio Bike Network Plan. Since the City adopted the plan in January of 2025, the recommended network is available online for people to view, read and discuss. While the plan identifies specific streets that must have safe bike facilities, the network can adapt and develop according to what community members demand.
Board President Russell Hom-Crosier is organizing a bike ride this fall in District 2 along the Salado Creek Greenway, inviting D2 Council member Jalen McKee-Rodriguez to talk about the status of projects that are in the Bike Network Plan for that district and the plans for those projects.
Board member Karen Leija is coordinating with District 7 Council member Marina Alderete Gavino to host a ride along the Leon Creek Greenway. The board members will focus on key topics including designs for existing and future trails, trail-to-road connections, bike routes to VIA Metropolitan Transit Centers and park-and-ride connections.
Bike meetups and more
In other news, Karen attended the National Meetup of Black Girls Do Bike held from June 11-14 in Raleigh, North Carolina. As a member of Black Girls Do Bike: San Antonio, she joined women from across the U.S. who ride together and promote more women of color on bikes.
Board member Bryan Martin has been working on a series of sidewalk surveys and YouTube videos that show existing conditions on major roads. The first video, filmed along Nacogdoches Road in District 10, offers viewers a 17-minute "audit" to show the lack of bike lanes and inadequate sidewalks in the area. It features an interview with a scooter rider who was also riding on the sidewalk. The second video shows the span of Broadway Street from District 10 to District 1.
Bryan is also proud to announce that his new bike shop, Bronko Bikes, is opening soon on Nacogdoches Road. The shop has been a long time coming. Congratulations, Bryan!
Board secretary Katie Nickas has been busy behind the scenes of Bike San Antonio to ensure the newsletter, website and accounts stay up to date. She joined Russell and Karen on April 12 for the Fiesta Wildflower Ride. They completed the 40-mile route that began at Rolling Oaks Mall and toured the Texas Hill Country, noting different aspects of the ride from a bike safety perspective.
Katie and Bryan attended a memorial ride held on May 25 in Corpus Christi in honor of Manny Macias, founder of the CC LED "lit" bike ride, who passed away on March 26. Rest in peace, Manny.
